Today, we are going to learn the phrase, 'let down' which means to move something or somebody to a lower position, to fail to meet the hopes or expections, to deflate or to allow the air to come out of something, to resew the hem so as to lengthen, etc. Let's take a look at example sentences.

1) To move something or somebody to a lower position

 ① Sailors let down the sails.

  선원들이 돛을 내렸다.

 ② Kane let down the a rope ladder for rescuers to climb up to the wrecked ship.

  케인은 구조대원들이 난파선에 오를 수 있도록 밧줄 사다리를 내렸다.

 

2) To fail to meet the hopes or expections

 ① They do not feel that they have let anyone down or done anything immoral.

  그들은 누군가를 실망시키거나 부도덕한 행위를 했다고 느끼지 않는다.

 ② I will not let you down anymore.

  더 이상 실망시켜드리지 않겠습니다.

 

3) To deflate or to allow the air to come out of something

 ① Who the hell let down the tires on my car? Im not going to let it slide this time.

  도대체 누가 내차 타이어 바람을 빼놓았지? 이번에는 그냥 넘어가지 않을 거야!!

 ② Jane let down the balloon to make it smaller.

  제인은 풍선을 더 작게 만들기 위해 풍선에서 바람을 뺐다. 

 

4) To resew the hem so as to lengthen

 ① His pants need to be let down two inches

  그의 바지는 2인치를 줄여야 한다.

 ② Jane asked the tailor to let the dress down a bit. 

  제인은 재단사에게 드레스 단을 늘려 달라고 요청하였다.
