This is Elsdaddy. Today, we are going to learn the phrase, 'go off' which has lots of useful meanings. It means to explode, to enter into an active state of an alarm, to leave a place and go somewhere else, to stop functioning, to happen in a particula rway, to go bad, as of food or drink, to become hostile and angry, to become worse in quality,  etc. Let's take a look at example sentences.

The bomb in the airplane will go off in 10 minitues. 

비행기에 있는 폭탄은 10분 후에 터질 것이다.

 

2) To enter into an active state of an alarm

① All students at school had to evacuate because the fire alarm went off.

화재경보기가 울려서 학교에 있던 모든 학생들이 대피해야 했다.

3) To leave a place and go somewhere else

Jane went off to get something to drink.

제인은 마실 것을 가지러 갔다

 

4) To stop functioning

The lights went off in several districts due to the Tsunami.

쓰나미로 인해 여러 지역에 불이 꺼졌다.

 

5) To happen in a particular way

Considering all the matters we had, it's surprising that the meeting went off so well.

우리가 가졌던 여러기지 문제를 고려해봤을 때, 그 미팅이 잘 진행되었다는 것이 놀랍다.

 

6) To go bad, as of food or drink

Don't eat the leftovers in ther refrigerator. They are two weeks old and have definitely gone off.

냉장고에 있는 남은 음식을 먹지 마세요. 그것들은 2주나 지나서 상했을 거예요. 

 

7) To become worse in quality

I think the magazine has really gone off since they got a new editor.

그 잡지는 새 편집장이 온 후로 질이 떨어지는 것 같아요.

 

8) To become hostile and angry

Kane just came into my room and went off on me without apparent reason. 

케인은 방에 들어와서 아무 뚜렷한 이유 없이 네게 화를 냈다.
